Project – PASEV

PASEV project aims to explore new perspectives regarding the cultural manifestations in Évora (UNESCO heritage from 1986), through the study and analysis of diverse sound related events from 1540 to 1910. The goal is to contribute to the valorisation and revaluation of Historical Soundscape Heritage and to a broad understanding of Évora as a cultural space exploiting a sensorial living of urban space, articulating scientific research, and cultural tourism. The main tool was the creation of digital resources (web page and digital platform) to disseminate the results, with the dynamic of digital transference of knowledge and disclose of Évora’s soundscape.

The Project program comprised 7 tasks:

1) Historical and Documental Research:Musical research and organology (with special attention to the bell heritage);

2) Musical practice in monastic communities and in religious manifestations between the 16th and 19th centuries;

3) Sociability repertoires: from the culture of Court to the public sphere;

4) Images and narratives of the historical soundscape;

5) Domain Analysis and Geographic Context

6) Interactive Platform for the Auditory Atlas of the City of Évora (https://pasev.uevora.pt), integrated and structured in connection with the wider project of the European Association for Digital Humanities (https://eadh.org/), for the promotion of knowledge transfer to new media and means of dissemination of European Culture;

7) Integration and engagement with society. The expansion of this model brings forth an understanding of different realities, in the same country and in the same historical period, and with other European cities.

We emphasize the edition of three scientific books: Paisagens sonoras urbanas: História, Memória e Património (2019), Paisagens sonoras históricas – Anatomia dos Sons nas Cidades (2021) and Sonoridades Eborenses (2022). We also organized 3 international scientific meetings (2019, 2020, 2021), an International Webinar about Bells Heritage (2020), a citywide bell ringing with young volunteers in 8 churches to celebrate the Opening of the European Researchers Night (2020), 2 concerts (2021) at Church of S. Francisco with world premiere repertoire. We also promoted the creation, in 2019, of an original soundtrack by two young composers for an historic documentary about Évora from 1929, screened alongside a live performance of said soundtracks”.
